New Jersey American Water Launches Interactive Webpage and Map to Help Educate Customers on Major Service Lines
As water continues to meet quality standards, customers will be notified if service lines are lead or galvanized steel in accordance with the new law

The educational webpage and map were created in response to New Jersey state legislation that requires all water providers to share with customers utility-owned and customer-operated service line materials. to their property, to advise customers with service lines that are made of lead or galvanized steel and replace them within ten years.

On the web page, customers can click on the map and enter their address in the “Find address” field. The map will zoom in to the address and display the utility and customer side service line material as known to the business. If the side belonging to the customer is shown as unknown, customers are encouraged to help identify it and report this information to the company using the pop-up form on the site.

In accordance with the new lead service line replacement law, New Jersey American Water is also required to send certified letters to all customers whose properties are serviced by a lead or galvanized steel service line. The company wants to assure its customers that if their service line contains lead or galvanized pipes, it does not mean that they cannot use the water as they normally would. Water supplied by New Jersey American Water meets state and federal water quality standards, including those established for lead.
“We regularly test for the presence of lead at the end of our treatment process, as required by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, and we also test our distribution system in accordance with regulatory requirements of the NJ. ‘EPA. These tests have shown that lead is not a problem in the water leaving any of our water treatment facilities,” McDonough said. “In addition, we are taking steps to reduce the potential for lead to leach from service lines and household pipes into water by managing pH levels in water leaving our treatment facilities and adding a corrosion inhibitor if necessary.
